Radon is formed from the decay of radium, a radioactive element in the decay series of uranium or thorium. It is a heavy substance that is a gas under normal conditions and being an alpha emitter is considered to be a health hazard. Inhalation of air with high radon concentration has been found to increase risk of lung cancer. Measurement of radon in living atmosphere thus becomes pertinent while assessing dose from natural environment. Since radon gas concentration in the environment varies diurnally and seasonally, it is essential that long term integrated measurements are carried out for a meaningful estimate of the gas concentration. Solid State Nuclear Track Detector (SSNTD) based dosimeters are used for long term measurement of radon in atmosphere.
Polltech has now developed a complete system for measurement of Radon which includes a specially designed dosimeter with LR115 loaded cartridges and an accurate constant temperature etching bath in addition to a field proven Spark counter, specifically used in conjunction with SSNTD films. The design allows loading and unloading of cartridges from Dosimeter and etching & washing of exposed LR115 without the need for touching the LR115 films.
The dosimeter comprises of four parts viz. two identical cups, a central disc for coupling the cups and an outer cap for holding the filter paper in one of the cups. Cup (1) has a perforated disc over which a glass fibre filter paper is tightly fixed with the cap. The glass fibre filter paper, being highly porous, allows both radon and thoron to permeate into the cup. Cup (2) has its mouth closed with a disc of 2 mm thick having 4 holes of 1 mm diameter and allows only radon gas to enter the cup. The central disc not only holds the cups on either sides, but also has provisions to hold the cartridges with SSNTD film (LR-115) on both the sides. The cartridge is custom made for holding 3 cm x 3 cm LR-115 film. Loading of the film into the cartridge and preparing the dosimeter for exposure become very simple with this arrangement.
A specially designed constant temperature bath for etching SSNTD films is provided to develop alpha tracks in them. Since temperature stability is very critical during etching of the film, the bath is designed to achieve temperature stability within 0.50C. The water bath is double walled with glass wool insulation for the inner vessel. Water inside the bath is heated to preset temperature using a resistive heater and is circulated inside the tank by a circulating pump to facilitate uniform heating. A proportional controller is employed to maintain the preset temperature of the water. There are 3 etching vessels, each having slots for 10 cartridges, making a total of 30 films processing at one time in the new etching bath.
Alpha tracks developed on LR -115 cellulose nitrate films are counted using a spark counter. Polltech spark counter is modified for easy operation using electronic control panel with display and provisions for data storage and data transfer facilities. The operating voltages are stored in a microprocessor for operational ease. The pre-sparking and counting voltage are adjustable from 100V to 1000V DC through digital potentiometers. The spark counting time called the Gate Window time is adjustable from 1 to 10 seconds. Data from the spark counter can be transferred to a PC through the in-built RS-232 serial communication link.
low level radon detection system (LLRDS)
LLRDS is an active sampling system where normal atmospheric radon levels can be measured. The system is basically a large volume chamber (5 L) where air sample from sampling spot is collected by suction or air exchange and 218Po atoms formed inside the chamber by decay of 222Rn is electrodeposited on a 2ÃÆÃ¢Ã¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã¬ÃâÃ metallic plate. The plate is then counted for alpha activity using programmable alpha counter. 222Rn concentration is calculated from sample volume, progeny collection and counting efficiencies.
Double filter system (DF)
DF system operates on the principle that while sucking air through a sampling tube having an inlet and an outlet filter, the inlet filter removes the progeny nuclides at the entry point and freshly formed progeny nuclides during transit of the gas through the tubing is collected on the exit filter. Counting of the outlet filter for alpha activity gives the gas concentration and a sequential counting of the inlet filter gives the concentrations of the progeny nuclides. The air flow and the sampling tube is carefully designed to give laminar flow through the tube while sampling air from the atmosphere.
